چکیده

Abstract The objective of the study was to determine hair cortisol concentrations in sows two different housing systems. Sows (n = 66, parity 0–6) were housed at SDSU sow facility and assigned one systems, stalls (STL) or group pens (PEN). STL 34) gestation from breeding until d111 ± 1.1 gestation; PEN 32) moved 3 approximately 24 h after a dynamic system. All females least 5d prior breeding. farrowing crates gestation. Hair shaved right hip within (defined as d0). At d37, d74, same area collected; samples d37 analyzed for cortisol. In statistical model, main effects system, time, their interactions tested with random effect. later [0–1 23), 2–3 17), 4–6 26)] assess between treatment. There treatment by interaction (P < 0.05) where 0–1 had higher (75.6 pg/mg) than (24.2 no effect on groups. Across parity, greater overall (49.4 vs 19.8 8.0 pg/mg hair). concentration tended be lower 0.06) (29.4 39.8 time observed. These results suggest that young experience stress individual stall increases progressing regardless

Reproduction of group-housed sows

The sow is a social animal in her behavior throughout the reproductive cycle. An exception to her preference for being a part of a social group occurs one to two1-2 d days prior to farrowing, when she separates from her group and seeks for isolation in order to build up a nest. She then spends the first week or two with her piglets, mainly in the nest. After this short period of separation of 1...

Automated Monitoring Methods For Group Housed Sows

This paper reviews the current automation methods of oestrus detection in group housed sows and points out their limitations. Results from non-automated methods are also presented, in an effort to draw conclusions to assist in the development of new automatic methods. Automatic measurement of physical traits, e.g. body temperature, collect non-specific information but may be combined with activ...

Management and Feeding of Group-Housed Gestating Sows

Moving pregnant sows from individual stalls to group housing will require many changes in management and feeding practices to maintain optimal biological performance and sow welfare. Dietary energy requirements of sows may change compared with stall housing but requirements for other nutrients are not likely to change significantly. Producers may need to consider feeding requirements to support...

Performance and well-being of sows housed in pens retrofitted from gestation stalls.

Pressures from consumers concerned with sow well-being in gestation stalls have encouraged producers to consider how to transition from individual gestation stalls to pens in existing buildings. The aim of this study was to evaluate the performance and well-being of sows in pens that were retrofitted from stalls (2.1 by 0.55 m). Large pens (5.5 by 7.3 m) housed 26 sows and small pens (5.5 by 1....

Concerns regarding hair cortisol as a biomarker of chronic stress in exercise and sport science.

Hair cortisol has the potential to fill the methodological void of long-term cortisol assessment while becoming a widely accepted measure in biopsychology. This review critically examines the applicability and relevance of hair cortisol measurement specifically within the field of exercise and sport science. Current measures of the HPA axis only cover a brief time period, whereas hair cortisol ...
